Grants awarded to support music and sport in villages near Hitchin

North Herts District Council has announced the allocation of two community grants totalling £2,198, supporting local initiatives aimed at reducing social isolation and enhancing wellbeing through music and sport.
The funding was awarded following recommendations from the council's Southern Rural Community Forum.
Pirton Community Choir Hits the Right Note
Pirton Community Choir has received a grant of £1,073 to invest in essential music equipment including a keyboard, case, stand, two microphone booms, and a piano stool. The inclusive choir welcomes residents of all ages and backgrounds with no audition required, offering a regular space for social interaction and musical connection—something especially valued in rural areas like Pirton.
Weekly rehearsals and performances at local events foster friendships and community spirit, particularly among older residents, newcomers, and those who work remotely. The new equipment will improve both rehearsals and public performances, all of which are supported by a local independent business. The Pirton Pumpkin Club has also contributed £250 to the project.
Heather Fuller, Musical Director of Pirton Community Choir, said:
"We're incredibly grateful to North Herts Council's Rural Community Grant Fund for their generous support. This funding will make a real difference as we expand our performances and reach new audiences. It empowers us to share the joy of community singing well beyond the village."
The choir promotes its work via Facebook and Instagram, and is currently developing a website and exploring local radio opportunities to broaden its outreach.
Whitwell 25 Football Club Kicks Off Again
Whitwell 25 Football Club has been awarded £1,125 to hire the Whitwell Recreation Ground and Pavilion for matches and training. The grant supports the re-establishment of a senior Sunday League team after the previous team disbanded during the pandemic.
The club aims to bring together residents from Whitwell and neighbouring villages, both as players and supporters, with future plans to include women's and senior teams. Football not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters social bonds and community pride. Additional funding has been raised through player contributions, a sponsor, and the Henry Smith Charity to cover kits, equipment, and match-day necessities.
Gary Ewington, Secretary of Whitwell 25 FC, commented:
"The grant will help Whitwell 25 FC in a big way. Thank you all for the support."
Council Praises Local Impact
Cllr Daniel Allen, Leader and Executive Member for Governance at North Herts Council, said:
"These projects show how grassroots groups can make a big difference – from singing in harmony to bringing football back to the local pitch. We're proud to support initiatives that help our communities thrive."
