Organisers of Hitchin Live at The Priory have explained why they cancelled the opening night of the new music festival after thunderstorms and torrential rain hit the town.

The Human League had been due to headline at Hitchin Priory on Thursday evening, August 27, supported by Roland Gift and Toyah.

However, the show was cancelled as severe weather swept through Hitchin, causing flooding and disruption across the town.

Hitchin Live at The Priory has now issued a statement saying the decision was made following advice and because the event could not be operated safely.

A spokesperson said: "Following advice, the decision was made to cancel Thursday's show. The consensus was that, due to the severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, the event could not be operated safely.

"The safety of our audience, artists, crew and staff is always our highest priority, and while we know this decision will be disappointing for many, it was not one that was taken lightly.

"We are in contact with our ticketing providers regarding next steps. We thank everyone for their understanding and support."

Thursday's cancellation came as large amounts of rain fell across Hitchin in a short period, flooding parts of the town centre and forcing Hitchin Lido to close until further notice.

Fabio's Gelato was among the town centre businesses affected by flooding.

The Human League concert had been due to launch four days of live music at The Priory over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The festival programme is scheduled to continue on Friday with Rudimental headlining, supported by Ella Eyre and DJ Charlie Tee.

The Libertines are due to headline on Saturday, while Ministry of Sound Classical is scheduled to close the festival on Sunday.

Organisers have not yet provided details of what Thursday ticket holders will be offered, but said they are speaking with ticketing providers about the next steps.
