Charity Costume Swap Coming To Hitchin
Plastic Free Hitchin will run a Costume Swap in the Hitchin Market Square on Saturday (October 22) to help families reduce their waste, save money and cut their environmental impact this Halloween.
Families are invited to pick up a pre-loved costume for their children for a suggested donation of £2, or £1 if they bring an outgrown item to swap.
The Hubbub Foundation estimated in one of their studies that nearly seven million Halloween costumes were simply thrown away in the UK alone in 2016, which equals the plastic in 83 million Coca-Cola bottles. Given that only a small percentage of these garments can be recycled, this means a vast majority of this 2000 tonnes of waste is going into landfill or incineration every year.
The single most effective way to cut down on this waste is to reuse what's already around, which is why Plastic Free Hitchin wants to give families a chance to swap their costumes and share the Halloween fun.
The swap will take place during the popular Apple Day, organised by Triangle Community Garden, which offers fun for the whole family from 10am till 2pm on Saturday, 22. October.
Costumes can either be brought to the swap on the day or donated in advance. All proceeds of the day will be shared between Plastic Free Communities and Triangle Community Garden.
