A specialist Hertfordshire Police team dedicated to protecting children from online abuse secured prison sentences totalling 136 years during 2025, following what senior officers have described as a relentless effort to keep young people safe across the county, including in Hitchin.
Hertfordshire Constabulary's Child Online Safeguarding Team (COST), which was named Force Team of the Year in November, investigates adults who target or exploit children through digital platforms.
During the past year, COST dealt with 564 referrals, many passed on by the National Crime Agency, leading to search warrants and arrests across Hertfordshire.
In total, officers arrested 154 suspects for offences including rape, incest and distributing indecent images of children. Their investigations resulted in 305 authorised charges and significant prison sentences, including several life terms.
Police say investigations remain ongoing, with 116 suspects currently on bail and 555 live cases still being managed by the team, highlighting the growing scale of online child exploitation.
Detective Inspector Fay Tooley, who leads the unit, praised her officers' commitment.
She said: "My detectives tackle some of the most distressing crimes imaginable, yet remain relentless in pursuing offenders. They execute warrants, make arrests and review disturbing material without hesitation."
Residents in Hitchin are being reminded that online safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and parents and carers are encouraged to talk regularly with children about online safety and report concerns.
Anyone worried about online child exploitation can report concerns to Hertfordshire Police via 101 or online through the force website, or contact the NSPCC helpline for advice and support.
