Herts Police are urging Hitchin residents to be alert after a house was burgled in broad daylight last weekend on a busy road near the centre of town.

Officers are warning people to be vigilant after a house was burgled in Grove Road, Hitchin.

Police said: "On Sunday, November 13 between 1pm and 3pm offender(s) committed a burglary at Grove Road, Hitchin. Method of entry unknown."

Please contact the police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime number 41/92756/22 if you or your neighbours have any information relating to this crime. Alternatively, you can give information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Please be vigilant and do report any suspicious activity or behaviour in the area.

Herts Police tips to prevent burglary:

Check downstairs windows and doors are securely locked before you leave or go to bed.

Use laminate glass where possible for any rear doors or windows. If this is not practicable, consider the use of security film over existing windows.

Use a "Fake TV" or timer switches on lamps to give the impression someone is at home.

Don't leave keys, phones or other valuables on windowsills or in any other visible place.

Secure UPVC doors by lifting the handle and locking it to engage the security features.

Consider using a doorbell camera, interior camera or a monitored burglar alarm.

Securely lock rear gates, sheds and garages.

Keep tools and ladders locked away, as they could be used to break into your home.

Consider adding trellis to any side or rear boundaries which adds extra height up to a maximum of 2 metres.
