Hitchin Squirrel Rescue has reacted to the sad news that the pregnant hedgehog that was attacked by children has now died.

A pregnant hedgehog and its young babies have now died in Hertfordshire, after being kicked and attacked by cowardly children - prompting a scathing response from a Hitchin-based animal organisation.

As Hitchin Nub News reported earlier this week, Hitchin Squirrel Rescue reacted to an appalling attack on a pregnant hedgehog.

Sadly, the stricken mum and her kids have sadly now died after such a callous attack - with police calling for witnesses.

At around 7pm on Monday (June 20), several boys were seen kicking the hedgehog and throwing stones at it in Porters Park Drive, Shenley, close to the junction with Tagalie Place.

Two passers-by intervened and the youths, thought to be aged between 12 and 13, were abusive before making off down an alleyway. The hedgehog was taken to a rescue centre for treatment.

Hitchin Squirrel Rescue spoke to Hitchin Nub News to share their sadness.

Animal lover Paul Allum, who runs an acclaimed squirrel sanctuary in Hitchin with wife Ania, said: "It's so sad - it's been happening too much.

"This is not the way for the young generation to be carrying on - if they think it's ok to kill animals then it could lead them on to other things.

"This has to start with the parents, and the schools should be doing more to educate - this is such a sad story with a sad ending."

Tragically, the hedgehog had to be put to sleep after the disgraceful attack from the schoolchildren inflicted such a serious injury on the mum's mouth, which left her unable to eat, or feed her young babies.

Despite the vet doing all they could to save her, they could not stitch the roof of her mouth, which was severely damaged in the attack.

If you were in the area at the time and saw what happened or have dash cam footage or CCTV or any other information that could help us to identify those involved please get in touch as soon as possible.
