Hitchin braces for bin service change

Over 106,000 households across North Herts, including Hitchin, are being notified of changes to their bin collection days as part of a wider service shake-up aimed at improving efficiency.
Letters and leaflets detailing the new collection schedules - that starts on August 4th - have been sent out by Royal Mail to ensure every property receives accurate and tailored information. However, not all residents have received theirs yet, as deliveries are arriving in batches.
Information will also be made available on the North Herts Council website for easy reference.
Deliveries of the new blue-lidded recycling bins are still taking place. The council has seen a rise in contact from residents following recent leaflet drops and promotions—an indication they say, that households are reaching out to ensure they have all necessary containers before the new collection routine begins.
Residents who have not yet received their blue-lidded bin are advised to contact the council via [email protected].
Bins and recycling containers are also being distributed to communal properties and sack customers, with additional leaflets and communications sent to flats and their managing agents.
The council's customer service and shared waste teams are currently experiencing a significant rise in enquiries. With two staff vacancies and a high number of resident queries, priority is being given to the most urgent requests.
To manage the transition, the council has temporarily paused its litter-picking support and reduced street cleansing inspections.
This may result in slower response times, and residents are being asked to be patient during this busy period.
