A Hitchin-based music charity is calling on local people to consider giving the gift of time this Christmas and New Year.

Music24 – which runs popular Singing Cafés in Hitchin and across Hertfordshire – is urging residents to step forward as volunteers to help support adults living with dementia, mental health challenges, learning disabilities and isolation.

The charity delivers 19 music groups across Herts and Beds, reaching more than 450 people every year. Operations Lead Jen Harris said volunteers are vital to making that possible.

"Volunteers are the beating heart of our charity; without them we could not deliver the nineteen music groups we run," she said. "Many of our service users tell us that coming to sing, dance and play instruments with Music24 is life-changing."

Co-founder and Lead Music Therapist Graeme Davis added that volunteering benefits those who give their time just as much as those who receive support.

"For many volunteers it's not only about giving back – it becomes part of their weekly routine, helps them make new friends and boosts their own wellbeing."

One volunteer, Di Pook, shared how Music24 helped her rebuild her life after losing her partner:

"I used to bring my partner to their sessions, and when I lost him, I sort of lost myself. Volunteering has given me purpose again, and I feel I can help others the way Music24 helped him."

Music24 is keen to hear from anyone with kindness, energy and community spirit – no musical ability is required.

"Volunteers make a huge difference to people's lives in just a few hours every week," said Jen. "This Christmas and into the New Year, we're asking people to think about what time they can give. Now is the time. You are needed."

Hitchin residents can get involved directly by contacting the charity, or by browsing wider opportunities via GoVolHerts.
