North Herts Council has launched a public consultation on its draft Town Centres Strategy — and residents in Hitchin are being encouraged to help shape the town's future.
The strategy outlines a long-term vision to ensure town centres across the district, including Hitchin, "remain vibrant, distinctive and sustainable". Key priorities include:
- Land use and retail development
- High-quality design for buildings, streets and public spaces
- Transport and access, including how people move around town centres
- Community, wellbeing and inclusive places
The consultation is open from 3 December 2025 to 30 January 2026, giving Hitchin residents, businesses and community groups the chance to share their views.
Feedback can be submitted via the council's online consultation platform,

As part of the consultation, the draft strategy will also be discussed at a series of public forums across the district — including here in Hitchin:
- Hitchin Town Hall – Monday 9 December, 7pm
Other sessions will take place in Baldock, Royston and Letchworth.
Cllr Donna Wright, North Herts Council's Executive Member for Place, said:
"Our town centres belong to everyone. We really want to hear from residents, businesses and community groups. So please take a few minutes to share your views and help shape the future of North Herts."
Hitchin Nub News will continue to follow the progress of the strategy as residents have their say.
