A popular Hitchin cocktail bar has appealed for support from customers as it faces a review of its premises licence following noise complaints.

Bridgetown Monroe's, in Hitchin town centre, says its opening hours could be reduced as part of the review, with the business warning that the outcome could have a significant impact on its future.

The bar has taken to social media to urge customers who support the venue to make their views known to North Herts Council.

According to Bridgetown Monroe's, the dispute follows ongoing complaints about noise from a nearby resident.

The business says it has been working with the council to address the concerns and has already made a number of changes to its operation.

These include dropping DJ nights, removing speakers and installing music restrictors in an effort to reduce noise.

Bridgetown Monroe's said: "We've worked tirelessly with the council to reduce noise, dropped DJ nights, removed speakers and added music restrictors.

"We've spent a fortune trying to keep everyone happy."

The bar said its licence is now being reviewed, with potential changes to its permitted operating hours.

Bridgetown Monroe's described the prospect of restrictions as "devastating", saying the independent business provides owner Woody with his livelihood, supports his family and employs local people.

The venue added that it had worked hard to operate as a "safe, welcoming and well-managed venue" and said it would continue working towards the four licensing objectives: preventing public nuisance, preventing crime and disorder, protecting children from harm and protecting public safety.

Bridgetown Monroe's was also named Best Overall Business in Hitchin last year.

The bar is now asking supporters to submit representations as part of the licensing process, explaining why they believe the venue should be allowed to continue operating under its existing licence.

In its appeal, Bridgetown Monroe's said: "If you've ever had a great night at Monroe's, now is the time to show your support.

"We will always continue to work towards the four licensing objectives and do everything we reasonably can to operate responsibly."

The bar signed off its appeal with characteristic humour, saying: "Hitchin without Monroe's? That's just a town with fewer tropical drinks and significantly less dancing."
