Special Constables help tackle Hitchin criminal damage in Westmill and Bearton

Hertfordshire's Special Constabulary has once again proved itself to be a valuable and reliable resource in helping to prevent crime.

Following a spate of criminal damage offences in the Westmill and Bearton areas of Hitchin, twelve volunteers from the Special Constabulary took part in an operation tackling the problem.

Hertfordshire's Special Constabulary is a team of over 200 volunteer police officers. They come from all walks of life and volunteer their spare time for a minimum of 16 hours a month. Highly trained, with full policing powers including the power to arrest, they play an essential role in preventing, reducing and tackling crime.

During the operation, which took place on Friday, October 7, ten Specials carried out high visibility patrols - and the deterrent paid off as there were no reports of criminal damage that night.

In addition, two Specials volunteering with the Operation Scorpion Team*, took part in an unmarked vehicle.

Special Superintendent Mike Allardyce, who took part in the operation, said: "We were pleased to be able to help out the officers in Hitchin and I am glad our efforts paid off.

"This operation is a great example of the difference that you can make volunteering as a Special Constable. We welcome applications all year round so if you are interested in finding out more, please visit hertspolicespecials.co.uk. If you're concerned about fitting the role in with your day job, check out the information about the Employer Supported Policing scheme (ESP) as your employer may be able to offer paid or unpaid time off work to complete your duties."

North Herts Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector James Lant added: "I would like to say a big thank you to all the Specials for their help. The high visibility presence clearly helped to prevent further incidents and their support was very much appreciated."

*Operation Scorpion are a specialist unit of officers, largely plain clothed, who tackle acquisitive crime.
