A number of 'Walk and Talk' events for women and girls are taking place across the county as part of Hertfordshire's Knife Angel campaign to promote anti-violence.

The Knife Angel is a 27-foot sculpture crafted from more than 100,000 knives and blades confiscated by the UK's 43 police forces. It visits around the country and throughout October it will be in Welwyn Garden City town centre.

The Walk and Talk events, which run regularly in Welwyn Hatfield, are part of the constabulary's ongoing work to tackle MVAWG (male violence against women and girls). They offer an opportunity to gain advice from the police on matters relating to women and girls' safety, as well as make friends and exercise in a safe space.

On Thursday 16 October, a Walk and Talk will be taking place at the Knife Angel and there will be a further six events taking place simultaneously across the county.

The events, which will be run by female PCs and PCSOs, will take place at the following locations:

  • Welwyn Garden City: Howardsgate by the Knife Angel
  • Potters Bar: Oakmere Park, High Street (meet in the car park)
  • St Albans: Highfield Park Visitor Centre (meet at the car park at the end of Frobisher Road)
  • Stevenage: Holy Trinity Church, High Street
  • Hitchin: Market Place
  • South Oxhey: Prestwick Road (meet outside Lidl)
  • Ware: Tudor Square

All events start at 7pm with the exception of St Albans and Ware which will start at 6pm.

Inspector Amy Sheldon, from the Welwyn Hatfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We are pleased to announce these events for the women and girls of Hertfordshire. Tackling male violence against women and girls is important to us all year round and the Knife Angel is another opportunity to work on this. We want to hear from women and girls about their views on local safety.

"The events have proved popular in Welwyn Hatfield and we hope lots more women and girls across the county take up the opportunity to come along."
