NHDC Councillors released a statement Sunday

Following the latest fire in Hitchin's industrial area Hitchin District Councillors released a statement calling on the Environment Agency and Hertfordshire Country Council to "urgently take whatever remedial action that lies within their powers" to resolve the situation.

The statement explained that:

"This week, Hitchin has witnessed yet another serious fire in one of the recycling centres in our industrial areas, the fifth in the last year"

"These fires have been a source of great concern to local residents, worried by what they and their families are being forced to breathe in. They are also disruptive to other local businesses. We cannot continue with this".

"Each fire also imposes a burden on local emergency services and presents a risk to firefighters and others who have to attend".

"As local North Herts District Councillors we believe that this situation is long past the point where firm action is needed. We call on the Environment Agency and Herts County Council, as the appropriate authorities, to urgently take whatever remedial action that lies within their powers, and to work with North Herts Council to resolve this situation".

"We say that enough is enough, Hitchin's residents should not have to put up with this situation any longer"
