Hitchin: Get set for Georgefest as talented musicians perform to boost funds for Alzheimer's Research
Get set for a brilliant Hitchin music festival that will boost funds for a charity doing great work.
Music lovers won't want to miss Georgefest at The George pub in the heart of Hitchin this weekend which will be raising money for Alzheimer's Research UK.
The event was organised by local favourite musician, Kev Maher who was inspired by his mother Susan
who recently passed away with Alzheimer's Disease. Kev said: "I'm really excited to see so many amazing musicians and friends come together in honour of my mum who I miss so much every day. The support has been incredible." The fundraiser on Saturday [December 11] and Sunday [December 12] will feature performances from around 30 of Hertfordshire's finest musicians, including local favourites The Scallywags. Other talented performers include fabulous tribute acts Highly Minogue, Mr Speaker does Coldplay and The Killers and The Disclaimers, plus award winning Dan Bond and a rare performance from Big Sharp Teeth. Kev's mother Susan lived in Hitchin her whole life, working as a typist for Bowring Marsh McLennan in the town. She met her husband Charlie in The Red Hart pub in Hitchin and they were soon married, followed by the birth of their only child Kev. Sadly Susan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease a few years ago, losing her precious memories and becoming very confused with day to day life. What astounded her many friends at The George was that she continued to support the local music scene until this year. She passed away in August with many of the musicians attending her funeral. Kev hopes to raise at least £1000 for Alzheimer's Research UK, which powers world-class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia. There are now nearly 1 million people in the UK living with dementia. All cash raised over the weekend will go to Alzheimer's Research UK, the UK's leading dementia researchcharity.
Jessica Sayer, Senior Regional Fundraising Manager at Alzheimer's Research UK, added: "We're so grateful to Kev for supporting Alzheimer's Research UK. Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population – one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition.
"Fantastic fundraising efforts like this will help us to make life-changing research breakthroughs for people with dementia."
The event is free to attend.
