HITCHIN: Our town's Twickenham heroes have been hailed this week after their stunning triumph in the final of a national rugby competition.
Hitchin Boys' School beat Torquay Grammar 11-0 in the final of the U15 Vase, part of the Schools Cup rugby tournament, courtesy of six points from the boot of Elliot Oughton and a try from Leo Rainbow, scored with five minutes to go.
Hitchin Nub News was at Rugby HQ on Wednesday to report on the team that was backed by more than 750 supporters from our town.
On a near to be forgotten day, the talented teens emerged victorious after a display full of character, composure and grit on during a rain-lashed match in challenging conditions.
The returning champions have been heralded as heroes by our town, not least by everyone at the school, rated outstanding by Ofsted.
The school's official Twitter account posted: "Great game, thanks to all of our travelling support and commiserations to Torquay after a great effort!" before the team took the acclaim of everyone at the school on Thursday.
They added: "We gathered the entire school on the quad to celebrate the achievement of the Under 15 team in winning the
@EngRugbySchools U15 Vase. "We thanked the boys for living the HBS values, parents for their support & the PE staff, particularly Mr Bajak, our incredible head of rugby!" ......... [H2]Hitchin Nub News editor Layth Yousif adds: [I]"As someone who has covered an awful lot of top level sport including England's Six Nations games at Twickenham, I have to say a massive well done to the team for showing such outstanding strength of character, spirit, commitment and teamwork in such difficult conditions, while being fearless on the biggest stage in the game. "I also have to say well done to each and every member of the squad for remaining so humble in victory, not only by showing respect to the opposition, but by displaying such heartening modesty in the aftermath of a fully deserved triumph in front of passionate, vociferous and well-behaved support. "Kudos also to No8 Reece Cairns, and of course, coach Chris Bajak for their eloquence and humility, in a lovely mix of self-deprecation and deep joy, when I interviewed them in Twickenham's mixed zone moments after the match, in an area normally reserved for World Cup winners and Six Nations champions. "The team and coaching staff are a true credit to the school and our town - congratulations to everyone associated with the team."[.B][H2] RELATED STORIES AND VIDEO See Hitchin Nub News Facebook page for video here I'm so proud of the team says humble Hitchin Boys' School coach Chris Bajak after Twickenham triumph Best day of my life says victorious Hitchin Boys' School No8 Reece Cairns after outstanding team effort sees HBS win national trophy at Twickenham Rugby Schools Cup Final: HBS 11-0 Torquay: Heroic Hitchin Boys' lift prestigious trophy at Twickenham
