Hitchin launches bid to become UK Town of Culture 2028
By James Denselow 16th Feb 2026
Hitchin has officially launched its bid to be named the UK's Town of Culture for 2028, with local organisations joining forces to showcase the town's thriving creative and community spirit.
The bid is being led by Hitchin Creative and Visit Hitchin, who say the campaign will highlight the town's rich mix of arts, culture, heritage, independent businesses and community groups.
A statement from the bid team said: "We believe that a strong creative community enhances the prospects of the groups, clubs and businesses that make Hitchin such a vibrant and exciting place to be."
If successful, the Town of Culture title would bring national attention to Hitchin, supporting new events, creative projects and investment in the town, while celebrating the people and organisations that already make it a cultural hub in North Hertfordshire.
Organisers say the bid will involve local residents, artists, businesses and community groups, with further opportunities for people to get involved expected to be announced in the coming months.
More details on the bid and how the community can support it are expected soon.
