Hitchin: Man arrested on suspicion of robbery at petrol station

A man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with an incident at a petrol garage in Hitchin.

Police were called to the Shell petrol garage on Bedford Road at 3pm on Saturday 27 February to reports of an armed robbery.

A man reportedly threatened a member of staff with a gun and demanded they hand over cash, which they did.

The suspect then left on foot in the direction of the Westmill area before getting into a vehicle which then drove off.

Officers, including members of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Armed Policing Unit, attended the area.

They arrested the man, a 20 year old man from Hitchin, in Nightingale Road before taking him to police custody.

Detective Sergeant Will Ainsworth, from the North Herts Local Crime Unit, said: "We already have a person in custody in connection with this incident and I'd like to reassure the community that no members of staff at the petrol garage were physically injured.

"We understand news of this robbery will cause alarm to residents but we are doing all we can to determine the circumstances around what happened.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to appeal for information and any potential witnesses who have not yet come forward to speak to us.

"Were you in the Bedford Road and Fishponds Road area this afternoon at around the time of the incident? Did you witness anyone acting suspiciously?

"If you were driving past the petrol station at the time and you have a dash cam fitted to your vehicle, please check the footage and get in touch with us if you think you have captured anything of note."

If you have any information that you believe could assist police, please call 101 quoting ISR 510 of 27 February.
