Hitchin MP Bim Afolami is backing new government measures which he says 'will revolutionise adult skills education in this country'.

The lifetime skills guarantee, introduced by PM Boris Johnson, aims to boost employment chances in a post-Covid economy - proposing that adults in England without A-levels will get free, fully-funded college courses.

Other measures in the new initiative include increasing funding for SMEs to take on more apprenticeships and make their training more flexible.

The Lifetime Skills Guarantee also includes making education loans more flexible so courses can be taken in segments.

"Apprenticeships provide a fantastic route for people to train in a range of technical professions while earning and learning on the job," said Mr Afolami.

"In Hitchin we are fortunate enough to have fantastic organisations like Hitchin based Amazing Apprenticeships, led by Anna Morrison CBE, who deliver vital opportunities for disadvantaged and vulnerable people locally.

"I want us to build on the great work of organisations like Amazing Apprenticeships and ensure that they have all the support they need to help local people."

The Hitchin MP also tackled the subject in the chamber of the House of Commons, where he asked the secretary of state to outline what more the government will do to ensure these opportunities continue and to provide significant incentives to employers taking new apprentices on.
