Hitchin MP Bim Afolami hails Ukraine President Zelensky as hero after Churchillian House of Commons address
HITCHIN: Our town's MP has reaction to an historic address in the heart of the world's oldest democracy by the Ukraine president.
Volodymyr Zelensky's Churchillian appeal for British help in repelling the Russian invasion of Ukraine in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon received a standing ovation from all sides of the house.
Invoking the spirit of British wartime leader Winston Churchill he issued a rallying cry promising he and his countrymen and women would take arms against the Russian invaders.
The Ukrainian president's unprecedented video vow was beamed directly into the world's oldest democracy - where Britian's wartime leader made his some of his most acclaimed orations.
The acclaimed Ukraine leader said his country would "fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets" in powerful speech that brought MPs to their feet to applaud – in the Commons chamber.
Hitchin MP Bim Afolami was present to watch the historic speech.
Speaking to Nub News he said: "I have never been as moved in the House of Commons as when I heard President Zelensky yesterday. He is a hero for democracy all across the world."
At the latest count the UK has issued 770 visas to people fleeing the war in Ukraine after 1.3 million refugees left the country since Russia invaded two weeks ago.
