Bim Afolami MP Meets Churchgate Retailers to hear their concerns

Hitchin's Member of Parliament Bim Afolami MP has been praised after meeting with retailers in Churchgate recently to hear about their concerns.

Hitchin's Member of Parliament met with a number of different retailers and their representatives in the heart of our town last week.

As well as discussing a number of areas where the retailers need support, they also looked at how Mr Afolami can work with them to make Hitchin an even better place for shoppers and those setting up shop in town.

Speaking after the visit Mr Afolami said: "Hitchin is an historic market town and we can be incredibly proud of our robust local economy and still thriving High Street and town centre.

"Churchgate is one of the key pieces in the heart of that local economy and the opportunities presented by the council's decision to purchase Churchgate must be seized to help support businesses and grow our local economy.

"It was disappointing to hear from the retailers about a number of areas where they haven't been getting the support that they need and I will be working with them to ensure that this is rectified.

"Looking forward, I will also continue to work hard to deliver on the potential of Hitchin's High Street – backing measures and investment that will make it an even better place to shop and spend time, to drive up footfall and strengthen the economic centre of our town."

Earlier this year, Hitchin was selected as one of only 30 towns across the UK to be a finalist in the 'Let's Celebrate Towns' competition. The Champion Award recognised exceptionally strong examples of towns that create a highly supportive business environment while helping communities to thrive, leading the way for other areas across the UK to follow.

Jon and Jo Taylor, directors of Lifestyle Emporium in Churchgate, added: "How nice to hear from our local MP.

"His visit gave us confidence in our future here at Churchgate Hitchin.

"As footfall for many of the shops have not returned to pre Covid levels and with increases in the cost of living, we are facing a challenging future.

"With the help of Mr Afolami's visit and seeing how the Churchgate shops including the two emporiums, the vintage market and the well-stocked charity shops to name a few all have a part in the Hitchin shopping experience."
