Hitchin MP Bim Afolami has raised concerns over increased fly-tipping the bin collections moving from 14 days to three weeks.

Residents in Hitchin and across North Hertfordshire will see a drop in the frequency of their non-recycling bin collection from 2025, according to plans being drawn up by local authorities.

As reported previously at Nub News, the move would see residiual waste, also known as 'black bin bag' collection, go from every fortnight to every three weeks.

Officers from North Herts councils say a once-every-three-week bin collection would encourage more households to recycle.

However, Hitchin's Parliamentarian, Mr Afolami has written to the council to express his concerns over the forthcoming changes.

In the letter, seen by Nub News, Mr Afolami writes: "A number of constituents have contacted me with concerns about North Herts Council's plans to cut bin collections, with general waste bins to be collected just once every three weeks. I share these concerns – waste collection is a vital service that residents pay for through their Council Tax.

"A move to three-weekly general waste collections could lead to increases in fly-tipping, result in rubbish bags which do not fit in bins ending up on streets in North Hertfordshire and create public health concerns, with over-flowing bins increasing the likelihood of attracting rats amongst other public health problems.

"I urge the Labour and Liberal Democrat Administration to reconsider these plans."
