Hitchin MP Alistair Strathern has paid tribute to Sir Keir Starmer after the Prime Minister announced he was stepping down, describing his departure as "dignified" and thanking him for his service during a challenging period in British politics.
In a statement released today, the Labour MP said Sir Keir had taken office against a backdrop of significant domestic and international challenges, including the cost-of-living crisis, pressure on public services, geopolitical instability and climate change.
Strathern highlighted what he described as key achievements of the government under Starmer's leadership, including investment in public services, measures aimed at reducing living costs, and strengthening Britain's relationships with international allies.
He said: "Against this backdrop, there is plenty to take pride in. Real action and investment to start to get public services back on our feet, possible because of choices that could never prove universally popular."
The Hitchin MP also pointed to Britain's role on the international stage, citing leadership on climate issues and efforts to rebuild relationships with European and global partners.
While acknowledging the political difficulties faced by Labour in government, Strathern said he had not believed the current moment was the right time for a leadership contest. However, he added that it was essential for any Prime Minister to command the confidence of Parliament and the country.
"With the PM having concluded today that he is not the right man to lead the country forward, I'm grateful for the dignity he has shown in stepping down in such a measured way," he said.
"I wish he and his family the very best after sacrificing so much to serve in such challenging circumstances."
Looking ahead, Strathern said Labour must learn lessons from both its successes and mistakes, while avoiding the political instability that has characterised much of the past decade.
He said: "My party must ensure we learn the right lessons. Both from the mistakes made along the way, and the issues from the cost of living to defence where we must show much more progress."
The MP concluded by reassuring constituents that he would continue to put the Hitchin constituency first.
"Rest assured as our MP, I will continue to do all I can to deliver on this. Supporting however I can, challenging constructively where needed, and always putting our fantastic Hitchin constituency at the heart of everything I do."
Strathern also thanked residents for their engagement with local and national issues, adding that despite the challenges of modern politics, he felt "truly lucky" to represent such an engaged community.
The Prime Minister's resignation will trigger a Labour leadership contest, with further details expected in the coming days.
