Hitchin Nub News review from Next Page Books: Grimwood by Nadia Shireen

Next Page Books are Hitchin's brilliant new addition on Queen Street.

They aim to be an inclusive children's bookshop that intends to celebrate and support neurodiversity in children and families.

Nub News is delighted to have a weekly update from the team at Next Page, so, read on a review of Grimwood by Nadia Shireen, by long-time pals Liz Tye and Julie Anderson.

.............

We had plenty of laugh out loud moments while reading this one! Nadia Shireen is best known for her amazing picture books (our favourite is Barbara Throws a Wobbler), but she has now expanded her offering with a hilarious highly illustrated story ideal for developing readers.

Ted and Nancy are streetwise city fox-cub siblings, but their arch enemy, Princess Buttons the evil cat, is bent on their destruction, forcing them to flee to Grimwood.

It's weird – the unfamiliar countryside, the eccentric animals, the activities (check out the Treebonkin').

But Ted soon settles in and makes his first ever proper friend, Willow the Rabbit, fan of sparkly purple legwarmers and amateur dramatics.

Nancy is harder to convince – she's been looking out for Ted since the disappearance of their parents ages ago – and sees danger lurking round every corner.

Princess Buttons pursues the fox-cubs to Grimwood, and it seems they may be done for, but with the help of their assorted new friends and a masterful plan, the evil feline is defeated.

There is so much for children to enjoy here – the illustrations are brilliant, the humour is pitched just right and there are lots of asides on offer from Eric Dynamite, a random woodlouse who appears every so often with a comment or two to add to the chaos.

At the heart of the story are themes of friendship, sibling loyalty and how new people and surroundings often turn out to be welcoming and fun.

Plus squirrels in leotards, a thieving conspiracy theorist eagle, and a few heartfelt letters from Ted to his Mum and Dad.

A hilarious anarchic riot! If you like funny books, this is the one for you.

For developing readers aged six and above.

Available from Next Page Books RRP £12.99
