HITCHIN: Herts Police carried out an operation called Urban Walkabout around our town in a bid to help homeless people.

The walkabout is intended to support those unfortunate enough to find themselves homeless, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

Members of the Safer Neighbourhood Team and Community Safety Unit, teamed up with outreach workers from Haven First North Herts, to engage with those who were sleeping rough in Hitchin.

Herts Police told Nub News: "As part of the welfare checks carried out, all those spoken to were offered a hot meal and drink, whilst suitable overnight accommodation was sourced for them nearby.

"We then discussed other help and services available to them and how to access these, and addressed any associated negative behaviour such as littering or ASB.

All of those we speak to are then registered under the operation, so that a partnership approach to their issues can be adopted and monitored going forward."
