Hitchin runner “Arnie the Turbanator” set for seventh London Marathon in support of local cause

A familiar face in Hitchin's running community will once again take on one of the world's most famous races this year.
Gurbir Singh Parmar — better known as "Arnie the Turbanator" — is preparing for his seventh London Marathon, combining his passion for endurance running with a commitment to a cause close to home.
The vice chairman of Hitchin Running Club is running in support of Leonard Cheshire Disability's Symonds House in Hitchin — a place he has a long-standing personal connection with.
Parmar previously volunteered as a driver for the organisation, helping residents maintain their independence and stay connected with the local community — an experience that left a lasting impact.
He said: "It's more than just a race for me. When you've seen first-hand the challenges people face, and how much places like Symonds House mean to them, it gives you a real reason to keep going — even when the miles get tough."
With more than 120 long-distance races already under his belt, Parmar is no stranger to pushing himself physically. But the London Marathon continues to stand out.
From the electric atmosphere to the crowds lining the streets, it's an event he returns to year after year — not just for the challenge, but for the shared sense of purpose among runners.
For Parmar, fundraising is just as important as reaching the finish line. Each mile represents an opportunity to give back and support vital services for people living with disabilities in Hitchin.
He added: "I love the challenge of the marathon, but even more than that, I love knowing that every step I take is helping someone else."
As he prepares to lace up his trainers once again, "Arnie the Turbanator" isn't just chasing another medal — he's continuing a mission built on compassion, commitment and community spirit.
