A Hitchin secondary school has reported further confirmed cases of Covid - including a staff member.

Hitchin Boys' School, on Grammar School Walk, has confirmed the infections involve a member of staff as well as an unspecified number of cases among Year 7 and Year 9.

The parents of those students and staff members who have been in close contact with the confirmed cases have received an individual phone call/letter advising them to self-isolate in line with the national guidance.

HBS headteacher Fergal Moane said in a letter sent to parents seen by Hitchin Nub News: "We have been informed this afternoon of confirmed cases of Covid within the Year 7 and Year 9 year groups and one staff member."

The school has advised parents that if they are in any doubt, to show caution and keep their child off school and seek a test.

Mr Moane added: "When we are contact tracing in school, we are required to look back to 48 hours before the person who tested positive first displays symptoms.

"Remaining away from school if in any doubt that the symptoms may be Covid would reduce the potential number of contacts and therefore those that have to self-isolate."

Mr Moane concluded: "Please reassure your son but remind them to be extra vigilant whilst at school with hand sterilisation, following the one-way system and using face coverings.

"Our collective community safety is an individual responsibility."
