Hitchin Street Food Monthly is a huge hit back at the square
It's the event that has got everyone talking - the brilliant Hitchin Street Food Monthly.
Hundreds of hungry punters gathered in the heart of Hitchin on Thursday evening to attend the latest edition of HSF.
The event made a triumphant return to Market Place after a sojourn down by the Riverside earlier this summer.
A large number of food stalls from local independents including Bun Lovin' Criminals, mouth-watering Afro-Carribean fusion with The Jerk Club, superb BBQ via Jacks Smoke Shack, outstanding fish and chips provided by Pimp My Fish, living the vegan dream with yom.uk and desert heaven with Crumb de la Creme. The Victoria Pub also had a busy pop-up bar.
Hitchin resident Owain Jones made a beeline for the event after reading about it on our website.
"I'm down here because I read on Nub News that the food market was in town and we live about 200 yards away," explained the renowned rugby man who does a lot of work with Hitchin Rugby Club juniors, adding: "Our kitchen is being done and we thought it was the perfect time to come down and get some nosh.
"With six or seven local independents with locally reared food I'm going to go for a burrito wrap similar to Carnita Carnitas to wake my stomach up!"
There was also a live DJ and sound system playing a spot of reggae and soulful vibes including The Specials "Message To You Rudi' and 'The Israelites' by Desmond Dekker [who once played in Hitchin at what is now Hermitage Road Bar and Restaurant].
The Ukraine flag that had been flying up the Keith Hoskins Flagpole was replaced by a Rainbow edition as the crowds thronged below.
Former Hitchin Boys' School pupil Matthew Bleasby - who had emigrated to Australia a decade previously - returned to the town on a short trip to the UK to see friends and family.
He told Hitchin Nub News: "I didn't know this event was on until I read Hitchin Nub News.
"I've been amazed, we never had stuff like this when I was growing up in Hitchin. Hitchin Nub News is a great source of information for anything you need to know about community events."
