Hitchin: Suspect arrested on suspicion of GBH after man suffers eye injury during serious assault in town centre

A man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH after a serious assault in Hitchin town centre left the victim with an eye injury.

Detectives in Hitchin are appealing for witnesses and information following a serious assault in Market Place.

Just before 130am on Saturday, May 15, there was an altercation between two men.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was hit with a vodka bottle which subsequently smashed. As a result, the victim suffered cuts to his face including an injury to one of his eyes and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The offender then left the scene with a woman, heading in the direction of Bucklesbury.

Investigating Officer DC Nathalia Smith said: "We believe that a male member of the public tried to intervene and help the victim so we need to trace this person as soon as possible, as he will have valuable evidence that will help our investigation - if this was you please contact me.

"We also think that there could have been many other people in the town square at that time, who either witnessed the attack or who may have other information. If you can help, please get in touch."

You can report information direct to DC Smith via email at [email protected] or online at herts.police.uk/report or call the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference 41/35782/21.
