Hitchin Tennis Club kept up the chase for the Division 1 title with victory against Pirton in the Datchworth summer league.
Club captain Andrew Roupany led a team that also included Olga Bohuszewicz and Kyle Wingate to a 3-0 home victory at Bancroft Gardens. It briefly took them to the summit of the league on Monday night before Orchard reclaimed top spot with a 3-0 away win at Knebworth.
With all the teams in Division 1 having played seven matches, Orchard lead on 17 sets, with Hitchin three sets behind in second.
Hitchin's fourth and fifth teams are also battling at the top end of their respective divisions. While Hitchin 4s had a bye week (yet still remain second in Division 6A), Hitchin 5s briefly took top spot in Division 7A with a 3-0 victory against Kimpton 7s as captain Sarah Custance continued her experiment of fielding a team of two women and one man in each fixture this season. The league's traditional format is for teams of two men and one woman.
Custance partnered with Lynda Papworth to play Kimpton's mixed pairing in the opening set and came away with a 9-4 win. Ben Page then teamed up with Papworth for the second set, winning 10-3, before Custance and Page beat Kimpton's men's pair 8-5 to complete the straight-sets victory.
That put Hitchin top of the division before Codicote 7s' result against Watton allowed them to move ahead by virtue of games won.
The top two are level on 15 sets each and, with two promotion spots available, there is everything to play for over the remainder of the season.
