Hitchin Town 4-1 Ware
By Roy Izzard 16th Feb 2026
Captain Ciaren Jones scored a hat-trick of headers all assisted by Callum Nicolson as Hitchin came from behind to beat Ware. It was a victory that pleased manager Michael Jones who felt we dominated the game after the first ten minutes and played some good football. He felt we were worthy of our half time lead and felt that Ware failed to lay a glove on us in the second half with Tyler McGregor having very little to do. Jones was pleased at such a good reaction to the Biggleswade defeat as this kept the pressure on Leighton Town.
There were two changes to the starting line up from the Biggleswade game with Toby Syme replacing the injured Charlie Briggs and Liam Brooks coming in for Diogo Freitas-Gouveia. After Kye Tearle had a shot blocked after a corner it was Ware who started brightly and they took the lead after 9 minutes as Reece Beckles-Richards scored from close range. Indeed Ware should have scored a second goal just 4 minutes later but this time Beckles-Richards shot wide. This was a costly miss as from this point Hitchin settled down and got on top.
Callum Kane had a diving header from a Tearle cross go wide before Taylor Rhiney headed over the bar after an excellent Lewis Franklin cross. Hitchin pressure was building and Brooks hit the bar before the equaliser arrived after 36 minutes. It was a perfect delivery from Nicolson's corner that Jones headed home. Then in the 45th minute Hitchin took the lead as Rhiney produced a great pass to Franklin who finished in exemplary style to further enhance his excellent scoring record.
The second half saw Hitchin playing some attractive football as they dominated possession. Chances were created with Nicolson having a shot saved before another Nicolson corner was headed home by Jones after 56 minutes. This eased the pressure and Hitchin were in total control. Franklin and Rhiney had chances and Callum Kane who was dangerous throughout had a shot well saved.
Substitute Stephen Gleeson was shown a red card while still on the bench for using foul and abusive language after an on the field incident. But Hitchin were not distracted and Jones completed a memorable hat trick after 88 minutes. This time it was from a Nicolson free kick that Jones again provided the perfect header. Hat tricks from defenders are very rare so Jones can feel very pleased with his achievement and Nicolson's dead ball deliveries are a potent weapon for Hitchin.
Leighton also won again so Hitchin will need to maintain great consistency in the remaining 11 games as there appears to be no margin for error. One thing in our favour is the tremendous support we are getting. An excellent 772 attendance showed how the support continues to grow and the backing of those fans can only help to inspire the players.
