HITCHIN: High winds from the approaching Storm Arwen are expected to cause severe disruption to transport and power lines across the country including our area.

Storm Arwen is set to batter the nation, with gusts likely to reach 50 to 60mph.

Rain will be spilling its way across our area, accompanied by brisk winds as increasingly cold air makes its way to us.

Temperatures drop down to freezing overnight to bring us a wintry mix with gusts of more than 40mph - with the wind chill factor feeling even colder.

There is also a risk of sleet and snow, while the Met Office is warning that flying debris is likely and could lead to injuries or danger to life.

There could also be damage to trees, temporary structures and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, with longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected.

Some roads and bridges are also likely to close.
