Hitchin's Black Lives Matter movement speak out after racially aggravated attack on BLM display

Hitchin's Black Lives Matter movement have responded with dignity to the racially aggravated attack on their display in Bedford Road.

Police are looking for an offender or offenders who defaced the BLM exhibition at Christchurch Methodist Church in Bedford Road with spray paint last month.

With the police still hunting for those who attacked the public display that celebrates black Britons, our town's BLM group have shared their thoughts on the situation.

Speaking to Nub News, Tony Williams, part of the town's BLM group, and chairperson of the Hitchin Diversity and Culture organisation said: "Seeing the news about the mindless and obviously racially motivated attack on the Black Britons display that Eddy Selby and the team at Christchurch had put on, we at Hitchin diversity and culture feel sickened.

"We are ashamed that someone in the community felt so ostracised that this is how they chose to vent their frustrations.

"The Christchurch Black Britons display was about celebrating the great things that black people have contributed to Britain and someone has taken that celebration away from our community and destroyed the hard work that Christchurch put into it.

"We will not allow the hate to reign over what was, and is, a joyous thing.

"We will work together to put on something bigger and better to celebrate the Black community of North Herts and around the UK and acknowledge those who have done amazing things."

If you have any information about the damage to the Black Lives Matter display in Hitchin call 101 or you can contact the investigating PC directly via email at [email protected].
