Is this Hitchin's most terrible road surface? Tell us your worst pothole

Is this the worst pothole in Hitchin?

As you can see from the photographs in our gallery, the deep and prolonged scar up to five or six inches deep on Willian Road must be a contender.

Potholes - collapsed areas on tarmac - occur due to surface pressure from traffic and from bad weather.

They are a nuisance and can pose a threat to road users including motorists and cyclists.

Our question comes after a survey this week suggested the number of potholes filled in by councils across the country increased to nearly 1.7 million over the last 12 months - up 200,000 from 1.5 million in 2019-20.

The Asphalt Industry Alliance said the figures were equal to one pothole being fixed every 19 seconds, with the total amount spent by local authorities on filling in potholes in 2020-21 being £93.6m.

We'll be asking Herts County Council next week when they intend to fill in the poor surface on Willian Road when they reopen once again after the Easter break, but in the meantime, we'd like to hear from YOU.

Where do YOU think is the biggest/most dangerous pothole in Hitchin? Let us know and we'll raise the issue with the council and see if we can get them to repair the offending area.

Let us know by posting a comment on our Facebook page under this story and we'll take it up with the council.
