Following the successful North Herts Pride event in Hitchin over the weekend the local Liberal Democrats put out a statement reaffirming "their commitment to creating a community where everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, feels safe, respected, and valued".

They were also at pains to point out that they were the only political party with a stall at the event.

David Chalmers, Deputy Leader of the Opposition on North Herts Council, said: "North Herts Liberal Democrats were the only political party present at the Pride Market event in Hitchin on Saturday 14th June, and received a very positive response from the public. People seemed to be reassured by our presence at the event and that we are standing up for their rights"

He added " Pride is not just a celebration, it is a vital act of visibility and resistance. It is about showing our LGBTQ+ friends, neighbours and colleagues that they are not alone, and that their rights, identities and contributions to society matter. In the face of rising hate crimes and polarising rhetoric, standing up for equality has never been more important. The Liberal Democrats will continue to lead that fight with pride, compassion and determination."

However, Labour MP for Hitchin, Alistair Strathern, was in attendance (although stall-less) commenting on social media that he had "a great afternoon at North Herts Pride in Hitchin today! Well done to everyone involved in helping make another fantastic local pride event possible".
