Lost Hitchin: Who recalls the Sailor Boy pub in Walsworth?

Do you remember Hitchin's Sailor Boy pub situated in the Walsworth area of our town?
The pub on Woolgrove Road closed in 2013 and was subsequently demolished following a mysterious fire one rainy evening in 2015.
In the resource Directory of Pubs in the UK a Mrs Agnes Saunders was listed as the first resident of the site in 1912.
However, the pub the Sailor, previously the Sailor Boy, dates back to around 1841. The reason for the nautical theme in the area is not known.
The evocative pictures come courtesy of the brilliant @HISTORICHITCHIN Twitter account run by the renowned Felix Camfield-Walker.
In the first image from 1974, Felix's account shows the Walsworth Festival parade with the Sailor Boy in the background.
Felix explains that the second image was taken in 1978. A young girl called Joanne stands on the footbridge onto Walsworth Common. In the background is the Sailor Boy pub.
The third and fourth shots show the pub in the late 19th century/early 20th, and the morning after the unexplained fire which marked the death knell of the pub.
Popular Felix is a keen historian on our town and also runs the superb Facebook page, called 'We are from Walsworth, Hertfordshire' along with Chrissy Russell, that Nub News covered earlier this year.
They set the page up in a response to increasing public demand for a dedicated site on the area and post interesting snaps of the area on a daily basis - prompting much comment and interest.
It's really worth a look if you're interested in that particular part of Hitchin or have ever lived around the area. You can visit their site here)
See Nub News soon for our latest UP CLOSE feature, which will be about Felix.
