Residents are being encouraged to make the most of Hitchin's parks and green spaces as North Herts Council marks this year's Love Parks Week.

Running until 2 August, the national campaign celebrates the importance of parks, commons, nature reserves and open spaces, with the council highlighting the role they play in supporting wildlife, improving wellbeing and bringing communities together.

For Hitchin residents, the spotlight falls on Oughtonhead Common and St John's Cemetery, which were both recognised with Green Flag Awards this year. St John's Cemetery achieved the accolade for the first time, while Oughtonhead Common retained its status as one of the country's best-managed green spaces.

The council says North Herts is home to a wide variety of parks and nature reserves, used daily for everything from family outings and lunchtime walks to volunteering and conservation work.

Behind the scenes, council officers work alongside volunteer groups, Friends organisations and Hertfordshire County Council's Countryside Management Service to maintain footpaths, improve accessibility, manage habitats, boost biodiversity and keep parks welcoming for visitors.

Love Parks Week also shines a light on the contribution of local volunteers, who help care for green spaces through litter picks, habitat management, wildlife monitoring and conservation projects.

Councillor Amy Allen, North Herts Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: "Love Parks Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the green spaces at the heart of our communities. Whether it's the buzz of a busy play area or the peace of a quiet walk through a nature reserve, our open spaces give residents space to breathe, meet, play and connect with nature.

"I'd encourage everyone to get involved in Love Parks Week by visiting a favourite park or exploring somewhere new. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a selection of green spaces across North Herts."

The council is encouraging residents to celebrate the week by discovering a new walking route, visiting a local nature reserve, enjoying a family trip to the park or simply spending more time outdoors.

Love Parks Week runs until Saturday 2 August.
