Sexual predator jailed for following and assaulting two lone women

A sexual predator who followed two lone women and assaulted them just two days apart has been sentenced to more than five years in prison. 

Mahmoud Nashawi, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault by digital penetration and one count of indecent exposure.

On 30 September, Nashawi followed a woman along Poynters Road, Luton, before approaching her and asking for a kiss. She tried to walk away, but he grabbed her and carried out his sexual assault.

During the incident, a teenage girl was passing by when she heard screaming. Upon realising what was happening she called 999 and waited with the victim until officers arrived, as Nashawi fled the scene.

Just two days later on 1 October, a different woman was walking along High Street, Dunstable, when she realised she was being followed by a man. He followed her to her house before indecently exposing himself to her at her doorstep.

Nashawi was identified on CCTV, which showed him following both women, and was arrested shortly after.

Nashawi, of Church Street, Dunstable, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Friday (5 April) to five years and seven months.

Detective Inspector Victoria Willett, from Bedfordshire Police's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team, said: "Nashawi had committed two serious sexual assaults where he followed, intimidated and preyed on two lone females.

"His attacks were carried out in a short space of time, and we are glad he was able to be stopped before his behaviour escalated.

"I would like to commend the two victims in this case. They have showed true courage to come forward and report their ordeal, and to continue their support throughout the investigation.

"We have several specially trained victim engagement officers who work closely with victims, supporting them throughout the investigation and justice process, as well helping them to move forward and recover.

"I would also like to praise the teenager who passed by and disturbed the incident, supporting the victim and calling the police. The judge rightly highly commended this teenager for her bravery.

"Attacks like these are rare, however women deserve to feel safe in public spaces. They should not have to look over their shoulder, or worry about who is approaching them, and we will always relentlessly pursue the vile perpetrators of such abhorrent behaviour."
