A man has been sentenced to four years in prison in connection with stalking a former partner in Hitchin.

Michael Hampton, 32, of Doulton Close, Harlow, was jailed yesterday (Monday 19 August) having previously pleaded guilty to one count of harassment with stalking involving serious alarm and assault by beating.

The incidents happened between July 2023 and January 2024. During this time, Hampton planted a listening device at the victim's home which he used to spy on her more than 600 times. He also continued to contact the victim via phone and by turning up at her home following the breakdown of the relationship.

In addition, a tracker was wired into the fuse box of her car so her daily movements could be monitored.

On 17 July 2023, Hampton followed the victim in his car, and when she tried to get away he grabbed hold of her, pushing her around. 

He appeared at Peterborough Crown Court for sentencing where he was also made subject of an indefinite restraining order, which bans him from making any contact with the victim.

Detective Inspector Samantha Alcock, from Hertfordshire Constabulary's Domestic Abuse Investigation Support Unit, said: "I am pleased that Michael Hampton has received a substantial prison sentence for his crimes.

"His obsessive behaviour caused the victim to live in fear, and this has understandably had a detrimental and psychological impact on her. I hope she will be able to start rebuilding her life now that Hampton is behind bars.

"I'd also like to extend a thanks to Detective Constable Alexander Akers, who led the investigation, for his tireless work in bringing Hampton to justice.
