Measles outbreak in nearby Enfield prompts warning to Hertfordshire parents
By James Denselow 22nd Feb 2026
Parents and carers in Hitchin are being urged to check their children's vaccination status after a significant measles outbreak in neighbouring Enfield.
While there are currently only a small number of cases in Hertfordshire, public health leaders say the county must not be complacent – particularly given the close links between communities across north London and south Hertfordshire.
Sarah Perman, Director of Public Health at Hertfordshire County Council, said: "Measles is a nasty illness that can make children very unwell. Sadly, some children who catch measles develop serious complications. One in five children end up needing hospital treatment, and occasionally measles can be fatal.
"Luckily there is a very effective and safe vaccine available. Children need two doses of the MMRV vaccine to get full protection. One in ten Hertfordshire children are at risk of catching measles as they are not up to date with their MMRV vaccine.
"I encourage parents and carers to check that their children are fully up to date. If you find that your child has missed a dose, please contact your GP practice to make an appointment."
Vaccination rates in Hertfordshire
To prevent measles spreading, 95% of eligible children need to be vaccinated.
In Hertfordshire:
- 93.6% of children aged five have had one dose
- 87.7% have had both doses
By comparison, in Enfield – where the outbreak is affecting nurseries and schools – only 64.3% of children have had both doses.
Although Hertfordshire's rates are higher, health officials warn they are still below the recommended 95% threshold, meaning around one in 10 children locally are not fully protected.
Changes to the vaccine schedule
From 1 January 2026, the routine childhood vaccination programme changed. The vaccine now protects against:
- Measles
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella (chickenpox)
The updated MMRV vaccine is offered:
- First dose at 12 months
- Second dose at 18 months
Public Health teams are working with local GPs and Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust to raise awareness and ensure families understand the importance of vaccination. Health visitors are also reminding parents during routine contacts.
What Hitchin parents should do
Parents and carers are being advised to:
- Check their child's red book or the NHS App to confirm vaccinations are up to date
- Contact their GP practice if one or both doses have been missed
- Ask about an alternative vaccine if pork-free options are required
- Visit the NHS website for guidance if symptoms appear
- Call their GP practice before attending if they suspect measles, and follow instructions
Measles symptoms can include a high fever, cough, runny nose, sore red eyes and a distinctive blotchy rash. In rare cases, complications can include brain inflammation and even death.
Public health officials say keeping vaccination rates high is key to protecting children in Hitchin and across North Hertfordshire – especially with an outbreak just a short distance away.
