MP safety: Police offer security support for Hitchin parliamentarian Bim Afolami

Hitchin MP Bim Afolami has vowed to continue his democratic duties and engage with his constituents despite the brutal murder of colleague Sir David Amess.

Sir David, 69, who represented Southend West in Essex, was killed a week ago at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

The senseless loss of an MP prompted an outpouring of grief across the country, leaving many shocked at Sir David's death, when he was simply carrying out his job by holding a surgery with the aim of meeting with constituents.

The fatal incident has led to a review of MPs security up and down the country, including Hitchin's elected representative, Mr Afolami.

Speaking exclusively to Hitchin Nub News, Mr Afolami said: "I have been grateful for the support of the police this week and their hard work to ensure that MPs' safety as we go about our local work is improved.

"It is vitally important that we can continue to engage with people safely."

Hitchin Nub News understands trained and accredited security operatives will be available to use for Mr Afolami's next Hitchin surgery (date to be confirmed) if he so wishes.

It is believed officers have contacted Mr Afolami, along with all 648 MPs, to offer a review of their security arrangements and give advice on holding face-to-face surgeries.
