The impressive work of the late, Abdo Nagi comes to North Herts Museum, with an exhibition showcasing the extraordinary life and achievements of the Letchworth resident in 'The ceramic art of Abdo Nagi' exhibition.

The exhibition runs from 12 April to 25 May, offering a fantastic opportunity to witness Nagi's innovative approach to pottery and explore his contribution to the art-form.

Born in Yemen in 1941, Nagi spent his early childhood as a goatherd. Aged twelve, Nagi moved to Aden, where he worked for British ex-pat families, and later came to Letchworth with his employer in 1967. He studied art at Hitchin College and went on to gain a ceramics degree at Middlesex University.

Abdo Nagi spent his life in Letchworth perfecting his pottery shapes and glazes, from early domestic wares to elegant stoneware vases and dishes with metallic rims. It wasn't long before he gained a national reputation, and his works rose in value. His work has been increasingly sought after since his death in 2001.

The exhibition includes many private loans as well as some extra special pieces from North Herts Museum's collections, including three large pieces the Museum bought from Nagi himself in 1997 – with grant support from the Art Fund.

Ros Allwood, Cultural Services Manager at North Herts Museum, commented on their exhibition: "Abdo was a lovely, kind and friendly man, as well as a nationally known studio potter. The new exhibition shows his work from the very early days at Hitchin College right through to pieces made shortly before his death. It has been a real treat for me to borrow over seventy pots for this exhibition from his family and collectors across the district and beyond."

North Herts Museum is located on Brand Street, Hitchin, open Tue-Sat 10.30am-4.30pm and Sun 11am-3pm. Admission is free.
