New programme aims to boost work experience opportunities for disadvantaged Hertfordshire youth

A new initiative designed to help disadvantaged young people access meaningful work experience has been launched across Hertfordshire.
The "Opening Doors" programme, delivered by Hertfordshire Careers Hub, will support hundreds of students over the next three years — with a particular focus on those facing barriers to employment.
Backed by the £2.3 million Future Ready Fund, Hertfordshire is one of just ten areas in the country selected to take part, highlighting the county's strong track record in careers support.
Supporting young people in Hitchin and beyond
The scheme will provide 375 young people from 25 schools with high-quality work experience placements, beginning in Year 8 and continuing through to Year 10.
By engaging students earlier, the programme aims to help shape GCSE choices and future career pathways — giving young people a clearer sense of direction before leaving school.
Crucially, the initiative targets those most in need of support, including pupils eligible for free school meals, young carers, children in care, and those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
Tackling inequality in access to opportunities
Research shows that access to high-quality work experience remains uneven, with disadvantaged young people the least likely to benefit.
In Hertfordshire, reliance on family connections to secure placements is significantly higher than the national average — making schemes like this particularly important in levelling the playing field.
Adrian Hawkins OBE, Chair of Hertfordshire Futures, said the programme is about giving every young person a fair start:
"By supporting children who have had a difficult start, we aim to build their self-confidence and skills… so they can enter the world of work on an equal footing."
A boost for local employers and the economy
Alongside supporting students, the programme also aims to strengthen links between schools and employers, helping businesses play a more active role in shaping the future workforce.
Local employers are being encouraged to take part by offering placements and supporting young people to gain real-world experience.
With youth unemployment rising nationally and skills shortages growing, organisers say initiatives like this are vital to preparing the next generation for the workplace.
Building confidence and future prospects
Participants will receive up to two weeks of modern, high-quality work experience, designed to build confidence, develop skills, and provide insight into different career paths.
For young people across North Hertfordshire — including Hitchin — the programme represents a significant opportunity to access experiences that might otherwise be out of reach, helping to unlock potential and improve long-term career prospects.
