Online petition calling for “proper resurfacing” of Herts roads backed by just two people

A public petition calling for the "proper resurfacing" of Hertfordshire's roads, which ran on the county council's website for almost two months, has closed with just two signatures.
According to the petition, Hertfordshire needs a "long-term plan to properly rebuild its roads".
And that, it says, will mean "committing a far greater share of the budget to full road resurfacing".
"The roads in Hertfordshire are used daily by residents and commercial traffic, keeping the county operating efficiently," argued the petition.
"The council's approach to road maintenance by repairing potholes simply does not work. The same holes are patched again and again, only to reappear,
"What is needed is not endless patching, but proper resurfacing.
"Whole sections of road must be taken up and re-laid properly, not repeatedly filled with short-term fixes that waste money."
The online petition ran on the council's website between February 12 and April 9.
But when it closed, it had been signed by just two people.
To be formally considered by a meeting of the relevant cabinet panel or the full county council, the condition of roads petition would have required the backing of 250 or 1,000 signatures, respectively.
Commenting on the petition, a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "We welcome the views of our residents, and petitions are one way that people can get in touch."
In the wake of the petition, council officials have also highlighted an announcement made by the council on February 12 – the day the petition launched – setting out £107m additional investment in highway maintenance, transport infrastructure and local improvement works.
They say the investment – which is in addition to £30m already allocated to routine maintenance – will be focused on improving safety and making it easier for people to walk, cycle and wheel across the county.
It will fund the delivery of 1,069 schemes, which will include the resurfacing of roads and pavements, the upgrading of traffic signals and the refurbishing of bridges.
Schemes will also include road safety improvements, including the expanded roll-out of 20mph areas, and schemes that support 'greener' travel choices.
