Petition launched calling for better bike security at Hitchin station after theft concerns

A Hitchin commuter has launched a petition calling for improved bike security at Hitchin railway station, claiming repeated bicycle thefts are discouraging people from cycling to the station and using sustainable transport.
The Change.org petition, started by local resident Daniel Marshall, argues that existing cycle parking facilities do not provide sufficient protection against theft and that more secure storage is urgently needed.
The campaign comes after what the petition describes as an increase in bike thefts at the station, with some commuters reportedly having multiple bicycles stolen within a short period of time.
Marshall writes: "Cycling is a convenient and environmentally friendly option for many commuters travelling to Hitchin train station. However, the increasing incidents of bike theft in the area are turning a green and healthy option into a source of stress and economic loss."
The petition calls for three key measures:
- Installation of secure cycle storage units with enhanced security features.
- Increased monitoring and patrols around cycle parking areas.
- Greater involvement from British Transport Police in investigating bike thefts and preventing future incidents.
According to the petition, the current facilities consist largely of standard cycle racks which campaigners say offer limited protection for commuters leaving bikes at the station throughout the working day.
The petition argues that improving security would support Hitchin's active cycling community and encourage more people to choose sustainable travel options without fear of theft.
As of this week, more than 60 people had signed the campaign, with organisers hoping to reach many more in the coming days.
Hitchin station serves thousands of passengers each week and acts as a major commuter hub for services into London and Cambridge.
The petition concludes: "It is important we illustrate a commitment to promoting sustainable transport while ensuring that commuters feel secure in choosing bicycles as their mode of arrival at the station.
