As Halloween and Bonfire Night approach, Hertfordshire Constabulary is urging Hitchin residents to enjoy the festivities safely — and to be considerate of neighbours who may not wish to take part.

Local Policing Superintendent Chris Hay said:

"Residents across the county can expect to see their local neighbourhood officers out on patrol, providing a reassuring presence and keeping everyone safe.

"Please remember that not everyone celebrates Halloween and we encourage those taking part in local activities to be mindful of others. Whilst some may consider their actions to be harmless fun, it can become a nuisance or danger to others."

He added that anyone with concerns should speak to their local officer or contact police through the usual channels.

Trick-or-treating safety tips

Police are sharing key advice to help keep the Halloween period safe and enjoyable for all:

  • Children should never go trick or treating alone — always take an adult.
  • Only knock on doors where it's clear callers are welcome, such as homes with Halloween decorations or official 'Trick or Treaters Welcome' posters.
  • Keep 'tricks' safe — damaging property, hurting people, or using threatening language are all criminal offences.
  • Follow road safety rules, especially after dark.

Firework safety and the law

Hertfordshire Constabulary also reminded residents that setting off fireworks in public areas is illegal. Private displays must end by 11pm, except on Bonfire Night (midnight). More information is available at gov.uk/fireworks-the-law.

Halloween competition

To celebrate the season, Hertfordshire Police are running a Halloween quiz for children, with the chance to win tickets to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter in Leavesden.

The competition closes at midnight on Thursday 6 November.

Residents can take part or read more about staying safe this Halloween by visiting herts.police.uk/halloween.
