£1m road repair programme launched to tackle winter potholes across Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire County Council has launched a £1 million programme of preventative road repairs aimed at stopping minor damage developing into potholes this winter.
The countywide programme will use existing highways funding to tackle cracks and deteriorating road surfaces before frost, rain and colder temperatures make them worse.
Highways teams will carry out targeted repairs over the coming months, prioritising locations where early work could make the biggest difference.
The council says the approach should help keep roads in better condition, reduce disruption for motorists and avoid more expensive repairs later in the winter.
Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst OBE, the council's executive member for highways, said: "Winter weather can be particularly challenging for our roads, with water, frost and traffic all contributing to the development of potholes."
He said the funding would allow crews to repair smaller defects before they became larger problems, helping to reduce the need for more substantial work later.
The programme forms part of the council's wider winter preparations, alongside gritting and responding to weather-related damage.
No specific Hitchin roads or repair dates were identified in the announcement.
Cllr Giles-Medhurst said the preventative work was intended to protect roads, improve journeys for residents and make the best use of funding already available.
