Rain showers throughout much of Saturday failed to deter visitors from enjoying this year's Hitchin Churchyard Day, with families turning out to support the annual community event in and around St Mary's Church.

Despite the wet weather, the churchyard remained busy as residents enjoyed a programme of live music, children's entertainment, food and drink, and a variety of attractions celebrating one of Hitchin's most historic locations.

Visitors were able to take guided tours of St Mary's Church, learning more about the history and heritage of the landmark building, while younger attendees enjoyed face painting and family-friendly activities throughout the day.

A popular attraction was the appearance of The Corn Hill Alpacas, which drew smiles from visitors of all ages and provided plenty of opportunities for photographs.

The event also featured a shop window trail around the town centre, encouraging people to explore local businesses, while those looking for a quieter experience were able to discover a secret garden hidden away within the churchyard surroundings.

Food and drink stalls kept visitors refreshed despite the challenging conditions, while live music provided a soundtrack to the day as organisers and volunteers worked hard to keep activities running smoothly.

Hitchin Churchyard Day is organised to celebrate the churchyard and its role at the heart of the community, bringing together local organisations, businesses and residents for a day of family entertainment and heritage.

Although the weather was far from ideal, those attending praised the atmosphere and community spirit on display, with organisers thanking volunteers, performers and visitors for helping make the day a success.

One attendee said: "It would have been nice to have some sunshine, but everyone just got on with it. There was plenty to do and it was great to see so many people supporting the event despite the rain."

The event once again demonstrated the important role St Mary's Church and its churchyard continue to play in the life of Hitchin, bringing people together at the heart of the town whatever the weather.
