Record 16,000-plus pothole repairs carried out across Hertfordshire this year
By James Denselow 16th Jul 2026
A record number of potholes have been repaired on Hertfordshire's roads this year, with county council highways teams fixing more than 16,000 defects in the first five months of 2026.
New figures released by Hertfordshire County Council show that 16,453 potholes were repaired between January and the end of May – the highest number ever completed during the same period – as crews responded to increased damage caused by wet winter weather.
The council says repair teams have been working at an average of around 109 potholes every day to keep the county's roads safe and traffic moving.
The milestone follows an exceptionally busy start to the year for highways crews, with above-average rainfall contributing to a rise in potholes across the county.
Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Hertfordshire County Council's Executive Member for Highways, said the figures reflected the hard work of frontline teams.
He said crews had worked tirelessly to repair damaged roads despite challenging weather conditions and stressed that the council remained committed to improving Hertfordshire's highway network.
Alongside routine pothole repairs, the council is continuing to invest in longer-term road maintenance and resurfacing schemes designed to prevent defects from forming in the first place.
Residents can continue to report potholes and other highway defects through Hertfordshire County Council's online reporting system, allowing repair teams to prioritise work based on safety and the condition of the road.
