A Hitchin town centre fixture for many decades has closed.

Merryfields on Sun Street has shut its doors for good after many years of trading.

The newsagent, which also stocked a huge selection of ordnance survey maps and travel guides, posted a note in its window advising people of the news.

Hitchin Nub News visited the town centre shop on Sunday evening. The message in the window read: "This newsagents is now closed.

"Merryfields would like to thank you for your custom," adding, "there are no valuables left on this property."

Hitchin Nub News is attempting to contact Merryfields to lean more.

In the meantime, please do share your memories and send us your stories of one of Hitchin's long-serving businesses.
