What Hitchin home owners should be thinking about

Hitchin Nub News caught up with M Scott Architectural Designs Ltd (MSAD) – one of our partners and a trusted local practice with more than 20 years of experience – to hear their top tips for home improvements as the seasons change.

Mark Scott, who leads the firm, highlighted three key areas Hitchin homeowners should be thinking about right now:

1. Plan ahead for big projects

If you're hoping to extend, renovate or redevelop your home, don't leave it until the last minute. "To have a home match-fit for Christmas, you really need to be thinking about Christmas 2026," Mark explained. "Planning applications and building works take time, so start early."

2. Reimagine your forever home

With the costs of moving house rising sharply, more Hitchin families are choosing to invest in their current property instead of facing the hurdles of finding somewhere new. "There's a relatively low churn of homes on the market locally, so we're seeing people reimagining their forever home," Mark said. One popular choice is investing in a new kitchen. On average, kitchens last about 15 years, and the trend in Hitchin is towards open-plan designs that create what Mark calls "the hub of the house."

3. Save money with smart energy choices

As colder weather sets in, it's also worth considering improvements that reduce energy bills. Technologies such as solar panels and air-source heat pumps can help households avoid rising costs for gas and oil while making homes more sustainable.

Mark and the team at MSAD are on hand to guide local residents through every step of the design and build journey.
